Why Alpaca Wool?
.
Inti Wool are 100% committed to eco-friendly practices, which why we are huge fans of these blankets in store. All their materials are sourced from free-range alpaca's in the northern area of Peru, where they roam at leisure, their fibres steeped in the rich lore of the Incas. They are on a mission to support small and rural communities and ensure that their productions remains small-scale, sustainable and beneficial to the locals of northern Peru.
Alpacas are naturally one of the most sustainable animals on the planet and can survive under extreme weather conditions and on rough terrain. Often they live on land that would otherwise be unoccupied and that has a zero net negative impact on the environment. The fibres in alpaca fleece are hollow, which traps air very quickly and leads to excellent insulation but with a relatively low-weight. We love the light weight feel of all their blankets and feel that this is what makes each one perfect for the home too! Alpaca fleece is also naturally water resistant as the air that gets trapped in the hollow fibres causes any moisture to evaporate very quickly.

.

How are they made?
.
Each blanket is made in a small family-owned factory in Lima, Peru. The alpaca wool is processed and spun into fine threads, before being hand dyed and woven using a loom into these vibrant blankets. They are then delicatly finished by hand by a local seamstress. The waster threads and fleece from the manufactruing process are then used to make duvet inners.

.

What are the design inspirations for the blankets?
.
The design for each blanket is carefully considered and are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Andean region. Historical designs reflected the connection between their societies and the natural world. This included motifs and colour inspired by both animals and botanical elements such as flowers and corn.
Many of their blankets contain geometric shares such as zig-zags and abstact symbols. Each holding specific meanings and representing aspects of daily life, spirituality and the cosmos. The chacana is known as the Andean cross and can be seen on our Nazca blankets. These are available to purchase via our website here
We hope you love these incredible traditional blankets as much as we do in store. Head down to Wapping Wharf, Bristol to see for yourself or shop our full range here.
Frankly x
